BlackBerry PlayBook updated

Not that long ago we received an update for the BlackBerry Bridge, and history has told us that once the Bridge is updated, the PlayBook follows suit. Its not the 2.0 update we are all anxiously waiting for, but it fixes many bugs, including a security issue with Adobe Flash.

Its nice to see the change logs that are coming with most of this updates and its nice to see that RIM is still fixing bugs and giving us updates, and not making us wait until February for the next update. Anyway, here is what the new OS addresses:

The BlackBerry PlayBook OS v1.0.8.4985 contains the following fixes and updates:

  • Updated version of Adobe® Flash® Player version 11.1 and Adobe AIR® 3.1
  • Daylight savings time updates for time zones in the regions of Latin America, Australia and Central America
  • Updated Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi® software to help to improve connectivity
  • Fixed issues some users were experiencing with account payments in the BlackBerry App World™ storefront
  • Improved synching when restoring applications with BlackBerry Desktop Software

This update also includes a security update for Adobe Flash Player, as noted in Adobe Security BulletinAPSB-11-28, which addresses issues that can potentially affect any PC, tablet, or other device with an operating system that supports Adobe Flash. While there are no known reports of any BlackBerry PlayBook tablet users being affected by these Adobe Flash Player issues, we (as always) encourage all BlackBerry PlayBook tablet users to update to the newest version of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS.

If you haven’t yet, go download it and enjoy! And if you notice something that wasn’t listed feel free to let us know in the comments.

Thank you gifts from RIM

We all remember the outage that happened a little while ago. RIM has decided to make it up to us by allowing users to get apps that normally cost money for free. Personally I didn’t feel that RIM had to do anything like this at all. Outages happen and have happened to many other companies, but it says a lot about RIM that they have done this for their users.

Here is the list of all the apps so far, and there will be more added from now to the end of the year. They will continue to give away all of these apps thru 12/31/11.

Native Calender, Contacts, Email on the PlayBook

Last week RIM had a BlackBerry Innovation Forum and during the Forum, RIM showed off the native PIM apps that we have been waiting for since the release of the PlayBook. They seem to be looking ready for launch, and February cannot come soon enough. Here are some pics to whet your appetite.

The email client:

From the looks of it, the email client looks great. Very similar to what we already have on our beloved phones. Great job.

The contacts client:

The contact client is powered by Gist. If you have Gist on your BlackBerry you are going to notice a very similar experience, and there is nothing wrong with that.

The calendar client:

The calender client looks pretty straight forward. One cool feature is that if you have a particularly busy day or week, the date is enlarged. A nice touch if you ask me.

February just can’t come soon enough. The features that are going to be added are going to put the PlayBook up there with the big boys. The media will have very little to complain about and a whole lot to praise. 2012 is going to be a big year for RIM.

Happy Thanksgiving from BlackBerry Today!

We want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. May your day be filled with laughter, love, and everyone who makes your life special. Eat well and rest up, that way you can go out and get all the Blackberries and BlackBerry accessories that will be on sale on Black Friday.

And to bring in the Christmas holiday season our friends at have come up with a BlackBerry version of Jingle Bells. Here it is…

CrackBerry Jingle Bells

 Dashing through the snow
In a BlackBerry 7 sleigh

O’er the BES they go
encrypted all the way
3 Bells on phone calls ring
Make my led bright
What fun it is to email, ping
And tweet ‘til late at night

Oh, jingle bells, Android smells
webOS go away
iPhone Yuck and Windows Phones suck
BlackBerry all the way, hey!
Oh, jingle bells, Android smells
webOS go away
iPhone Yuck and Windows Phones suck
BlackBerry all the way, hey!

 A day or two ago

My friend gave me a ride
for GPS he had
and iPhone by his side
the battery life was rank
and Siri’s directions sucked
We got into a drifted bank
and he knew he we were f*ck’n stuck!

Oh, jingle bells, Android smells
webOS go away
iPhone Yuck and Windows Phones suck
BlackBerry all the way, hey!
Oh, jingle bells, Android smells
webOS go away
iPhone Yuck and Windows Phones suck
BlackBerry all the way, hey!

Every day or so,
Someone feels compelled
To tell me to switch phones
I respond with “Go to Hell!”
Some guy was walking by
In some Windows Tango craze,
I laughed and hit him with my PlayBook,
in an OtterBox, just in case.

Oh, jingle bells, Android smells
webOS go away
iPhone Yuck and Windows Phones suck
BlackBerry all the way, hey!
Oh, jingle bells, Android smells
webOS go away
iPhone Yuck and Windows Phones suck
BlackBerry all the way, hey!

Kevin love his BlackBerrys white
His hopes for BBX are strong,
Hit the Apple Store tonight
and sing this fanboy song;
For the top stories today
The next two lines take heed
There’s way too many sites out there
but CrackBerry takes the lead!

Oh, jingle bells, Android smells
webOS go away
iPhone Yuck and Windows Phones suck
BlackBerry all the way, hey!
Oh, jingle bells, Android smells
webOS go away
iPhone Yuck and Windows Phones suck
BlackBerry all the way, hey!

White 9900 coming to T-Mobile? (Updated!)

Something about white Bolds has always just worked for me, but oddly enough, I’ve never owned one. My wife had a white 9700 for T-Mobile and it looks like they are going to be the 1st American carrier to carry a white Bold 9900. I still think that the pricing is a little high, but they will still have a sexy phone.

As a Sprint user, I hope they are paying attention and offer a white 9930. I don’t think that Sprint or Verizon has ever had a white Bold, and hopefully they change that trend.

So, who’s going to pick up a white 9900?

Here is some close up and higher res pics of the white 9900:

Technically its not for T-Mobile, but it does give us a close up look at what the beauty is going to look like. The accessories are white too. To see more pics, check out the source.

BlackBerry Playbook, THE tablet of this holiday season?

Retailers have slashed prices on the PlayBook. They are roughly $300 off almost everywhere. This could be a very good thing for RIM. No other tablet at that price point can offer all that the PlayBook can offer. We know what it has and what it can do, and with the upcoming update, which will essentially change the tablet we know and love, it can be a major hit this holiday season.

To ensure that the PlayBook does well this holiday season, RIM needs to do something that historically they have not been good at, and that is market it. Lets face it, RIM’s marketing team is horrible. There is no RIM commercial I can say that I remember. Their “Love what you do” campaign was pretty good, but it was hard to connect those commercials to a BlackBerry.  RIM needs to start spending money on marketing if they want the PlayBook to succeed. Good marketing has helped any and every product out there. Who markets better than Apple? No one, and look how successful the iPhone and iPad have become.

Our friends at have put up a list of places that have the PlayBook on sale. Check it here:

I will be doing my part to convince potential buyers to pick  up the PlayBook. It offers more than the Kindle Fire or the Nook Tablet. Its an incredible device that I have enjoyed thoroughly, and I will try to share my experience with everyone who is willing to listen.

Welcome Will to the BlackBerry Today team!
