The more I look at this device, the more it grows on me. This is a huge step away from everything that RIM has ever made to this point. The PlayBook was a step in a different direction for RIM, but the London is very different from anything RIM has made to this point.
Though I think that the design is different and unique and that is exactly what RIM needs right now. If you look at almost every Android device out there, they all look pretty much the same. It is really hard to differentiate the new phones from the old one, the high end ones from the mid-range one. The only tell tale difference is size. The lower to mid-range Android phones tend to be on the smaller size. The iPhone is a beautiful piece of hardware, but its an iPhone. The 4 and 4S are identical, and the design is getting dated.
With the BlackBerry London, RIM is going to separate itself from the crowd. There is nothing out there that looks even close to it. Unique design will be the 1st thing that the mainstream public will notice. They will be shocked that a phone like that could be a BlackBerry. If RIM wants to get back the mindshare that they’ve lost, they need to show the world that they are ready to not just step into the future, but dive in head first. As long as its not too big or thick, I believe that the London will be a hit.
The only thing that might not be good is the rumors are that we won’t see this phone until Q3 of 2012. I really hope that RIM realizes that would be a mistake and get the phone to the world sooner than that.
